Our House System
At Graven Hill Primary and Preschool, our House System is a central part of school life and a powerful way of helping children feel that they truly belong, achieve and thrive as part of our community. Every child and member of staff belongs to one of our five Houses, creating connections that run across year groups and bring the whole school together in shared purpose.
Through the House System, children earn house points throughout the year for demonstrating our school values, showing kindness, working hard and participating in school life. During Sports Day, children also compete in their Houses to earn additional points, strengthening teamwork and friendly competition. At the end of the year, the House with the highest total is awarded The Bill Green Cup—a celebration of collective effort, achievement and community spirit.
Why We Have a House System
1. It Builds Belonging and Identity
One of the strongest protective factors in a child’s school experience is the feeling that they are part of something bigger than themselves—part of a team, a community and a shared story. Our House System gives every child an immediate sense of identity and belonging from their very first day.
2. It Strengthens Relationships Across the School
Houses connect children of different ages, helping older pupils model positive behaviour and leadership, and giving younger children supportive role models. These relationships help build the safe, nurturing culture we value so deeply at Graven Hill.
3. It Promotes Teamwork and Collaboration
Being part of a House teaches children how to work together, encourage others, celebrate success and respond positively to setbacks. They learn that everyone has strengths to contribute—and that achievements are even more powerful when shared.
4. It Encourages Positive Behaviour and Effort
House points recognise not just academic success, but kindness, resilience, perseverance and contribution. This motivates children to try their best, support others and demonstrate our core values in everything they do.
5. It Creates Joy, Energy and School Spirit
House events such as challenges, activities, theme days and Sports Day help build excitement, pride and community spirit. Children love representing their House and cheering on their teammates.
Celebrating Success Together
At the end of each year, we total all the points earned from daily effort, school values and major events such as Sports Day. The House with the highest score is awarded The Bill Green House Cup—a celebration of teamwork, shared commitment and the collective achievements of our children.
But just as importantly, the House System helps every child feel part of a caring, connected community—something we believe is essential for learning, wellbeing and personal growth.
