Computing

At Graven Hill Primary and Preschool, we believe that a high‑quality computing education equips children with the knowledge, skills and confidence to understand and shape the digital world around them. Computing is a vital part of modern life, and our curriculum is designed to develop computational thinking, creativity and digital responsibility from an early age.

Computing has strong links with mathematics, science and design & technology, helping children make meaningful connections across subjects and apply their learning in purposeful, real‑world contexts. Through computing, pupils gain insight into both natural and artificial systems and learn how technology influences the way we live, work and communicate.

Our Computing Curriculum

The core of our computing curriculum is computer science. Children are taught:

  • How information and data are represented and processed
  • How digital systems work
  • The principles of algorithms and programming
  • How to break problems down into logical steps

As children progress, they learn how to apply this understanding by writing, testing and improving simple programmes, building systems and solving increasingly complex problems. This structured approach ensures that knowledge is revisited, deepened and built upon over time.

Information Technology and Creativity

Alongside computer science, pupils are taught to use information technology to create, design and present digital content. They learn how to use a range of tools and platforms to:

  • Create digital media and presentations
  • Organise, manipulate and present information
  • Collaborate and communicate effectively
  • Express ideas creatively and purposefully

These opportunities allow children to apply their technical knowledge in imaginative ways, supporting both independence and creativity.

Digital Literacy and Online Safety

A key aim of our computing curriculum is to ensure that children become digitally literate. This means they are able to use technology safely, responsibly and confidently — not only for learning, but as active participants in an increasingly digital society.

Children are taught how to:

  • Use technology appropriately and respectfully
  • Stay safe online and understand digital risks
  • Manage information and make informed choices
  • Understand their role and responsibility as digital citizens

This learning is carefully sequenced and reinforced regularly, ensuring children are well prepared for future education, the workplace and life beyond school.

Preparing Children for the Future

Our computing curriculum ensures that children leave Graven Hill with:

  • Secure foundational knowledge in computing
  • Confidence to use and adapt to new technologies
  • Strong problem‑solving and logical thinking skills
  • The ability to create, communicate and collaborate digitally
  • A clear understanding of how technology can be used for good

By combining technical knowledge, creativity and digital responsibility, our computing curriculum empowers children to engage thoughtfully with the digital world — not just as users of technology, but as confident, capable and informed creators.
