Equality Statement
Rationale
Graven Hill Primary and Preschool is a new, inclusive school for children aged 2 to 11. We are proud to serve a diverse and growing community, and we are committed to ensuring that every person connected with our school is treated with dignity, respect and fairness. Equality of opportunity is a fundamental right for all members of our school community, and we believe deeply in the potential of every individual.
The Equality Act 2010 requires schools to demonstrate how they actively promote equality in their policies, their provision and their practice. We take this responsibility seriously. Our commitment to equality is reflected not only in our policies but in the daily life of the school—how we speak, how we act, and how we model our values to children.
Our Equality Policy covers all protected characteristics under the Equality Act:
- Sex
- Race
- Disability
- Religion or belief
- Sexual orientation
- Gender reassignment
- Pregnancy or maternity
- Marriage and civil partnership
- Age
Although age is a protected characteristic, this does not apply to pupils in school. However, Graven Hill Primary and Preschool ensures that no parent, carer, employee or visitor is discriminated against because of their age.
Our aim is to create a school where diversity is valued and where the rights, beliefs and identities of all are protected, respected and celebrated. To achieve this, equality must not be a standalone idea—it must be woven into every aspect of school life. Our Equality Policy is intended to have a direct and positive impact on the ethos of our school and sits alongside our home‑school agreement and behaviour policy.
Aims
Our pupils, families and staff come from a range of backgrounds, experiences and communities. While Graven Hill is a cohesive and nurturing environment, we recognise the importance of actively promoting strong, positive relationships across all groups and ensuring that every child and adult feels that they belong.
We aim to:
- Place equality for all at the heart of everything we do
- Celebrate the richness and diversity of our community
- Eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation
- Promote equality of opportunity for all pupils and adults
- Foster good relations between all people who learn and work within our school community
At Graven Hill Primary and Preschool, we strive to build an environment where every child feels safe, included and empowered to succeed—and where every family knows they are a valued part of our school.
